Our attention has become our most valuable asset. There are so many distractions and problems competing for it that it's easy to just default to the path of least resistance. I do it too. Most of my entertainment consumption happens from the comfort of my own home. TV, video games, YouTube. It's comfortable and I'm not going to pretend I don't love it.

But there's something about watching a film in a theater with other people that just can't be replicated. You're sitting in a dark room with strangers and the whole audience is breathing together. Laughing at the same time. Getting uncomfortable at the same time. That communal experience is one of the most powerful things about film and it's slowly disappearing.

So I wanted to try and engineer it.

Next Wednesday, March 11, my new experimental film The Wilted Flower will have its premiere at The Music Box Theatre in Chicago. It's screening alongside some other great filmmakers with new projects. The lineup is really strong and I'm proud to be part of it.

Here's the truth. We all feel like outsiders and rejects when we put new work into the world. Especially work this personal. You spend all this time making something and then you have to stand there while people decide what they think about it. It takes a special kind of stubbornness to see it through. But that's where you find out what actually works. Not in the edit. Not in your own head. In a room full of people you've never met.

The screening is at 7pm. There's a Q&A with the filmmakers afterward and we'll be hanging around after that too. I hope to see you there.

I'm pulling my 16mm Eclair back out after two years to shoot a micro film on expired short ends. The film look isn't about the stock. It's about the process.
