“Film is magic.”
Steven Spielberg
A dollar a second. That’s what film costs when you’re rolling.
Five or six years ago, I was shooting about half my work on film. Motion picture and stills. Music videos. A feature. I’ve got thousands of feet sitting in my freezer right now.
I was perhaps foolish enough to fall in love with it. But I appreciate what I learned. When every frame costs money, you become intentional. You rehearse more. You know exactly what you need before you roll.
The look is built through chemistry. Different batches look different. It’s becoming kind of a dying art form.
But here’s the thing. I’m now really a convert.
Digital has gotten incredible. The dynamic range, the low light, the flexibility. And with the tools we have in Resolve now, you can get most of the way there. The halation, the grain, the texture. It doesn’t matter what camera you use. You need to put the work in to get the best cinematic image possible.
